Politicians’ refusal to answer questions ~Why are politicians who don’t answer questions properly bad?~

未分類

Recently, we have seen many cases of politicians not answering questions properly in congress, refusing to answer questions or repeatedly giving irrelevant answers. And unfortunately, such dishonest or unqualified politicians continue to run for election and get elected again and again.

So Why are politicians who don’t answer questions properly bad?

In Japan, or in the democracy, the rules we must follow, in other words the laws, are decided by discussions among politicians. Furthermore, these laws must not be made for the “benefit” of people belonging to specific communities or companies, but must be made with the aim of alleviating the suffering and realizing the hopes of a wide range of citizens.

If so, is a person who does not answer questions properly fit to be a politician?

 The answer is No.

It goes without saying, but when decisions are made through discussion, reading comprehension (in this case, the ability to grasp the important points of questions) is essential for those participating in the discussion.

For example, not answering a question that asks for a “yes” or “no” with “yes” or “no,” not stating that she or he cannot answer with a “yes or no,” or repeating an answer that has nothing to do with what the questioner “wants to ask” even though it is clear what the questioner “wants to ask” are, shows a lack of the reading comprehension required in the discussion. If they cannot even understand what the person they are talking to wants to ask, there is no way they can understand the hopes and suffering of the many citizens with whom they do not speak directly. If that is the case, then someone who lacks reading comprehension cannot fulfill her or his role as a politician.

Furthermore, in terms of sincerity, there is a major problem with such attitudes of replying. When asked to answer with “yes” or “no,” it is the minimum etiquette to answer with ‘yes’ or “no” to the questioner. If they cannot answer with “yes” or “no,” they must at least state clearly that they cannot answer with “yes or no,” and when asked why they cannot answer, they must explain the reason clearly to move the discussion forward.

The same is true if they give a response that has nothing to do with the important point of the question (what the questioner most wants to ask). While I have already mentioned about the lack of reading comprehension, it is clearly an act of dishonesty to digress when they know the important point of the question. Since congress is a place where people with different views can discuss and decide the rules of society through those discussions, the people there must have reading comprehension and honesty.

Considering these points, the act of “not answering questions properly” is clear evidence that the person does not possess the reading comprehension or sincerity necessary for a politician.

In other words, someone who cannot answer questions properly should not be a representative, or a politician.

Democracy can only exist through fair discussion. Those who do not engage in proper question and answer sessions do not understand democracy, and therefore, they will never be able to realize democracy.
